Richmond-native Anthony Simpson has been named the winner of the second annual Robert E. Wone Award for Exemplary Service. Anthony was honored at an AmeriCorps Launch Event at John Tyler Community College in Chester, Oct. 16. He is a returning member to the VCU AmeriCorps - America Reads program and is being honored for his consistent and valuable service to Virginia's students.
Anthony Simpson's desire to improve his community is rooted in his commitment to improving the lives of children. Born and raised in North Richmond, Anthony graduated from John Marshall High School and attended Virginia Union University (VUU). While attending VUU, he majored in special education -- a decision he made from his own experiences as a person with a disability. Despite being bound to a motorized scooter, Anthony sets high personal and career goals that include improving the lives of others with disabilities through community education and awareness initiatives.
As an AmeriCorps member, Anthony was able to accomplish his dream of working with and teaching children. At Woodville Elementary School he assisted teachers in their classrooms and tutored students to improve their grades and test scores. Taking this role seriously, Anthony diligently pre-planned his lessons and arrived at his school site energized and ready to work. Often times he used his students' inquisitiveness about his disability as an opportunity to teach tolerance and open-mindedness. During his service as an AmeriCorps member, he also actively worked to improve accessibility at the school.
Anthony Simpson has demonstrated through his actions and words that everyone has the ability to achieve success with hard work and determination. Find your passion. Volunteer today.
