January is National Mentoring Month
Start off the new year by honoring the commitment, energy, and enthusiasm devoted by mentors across the nation. Mentors help to shape character, teach skills, and instill compassion and responsibility in young people. They serve as motivators and guides that can encourage youth to do well in school and make their way into a healthy and successful future. Listen to testimonials from celebrities like Oprah Winfrey and Colin Powell on who mentored them in their lives. Find out more about National Mentoring Month and the Virginia Mentoring Partnership.

MLK Day of Service Events in Virginia
Martin Luther King, Jr. Day of Service is January 19. Faith-based and community organizations are planning service projects and events to honor the holiday across the Commonwealth. The holiday has been mandated by the federal government as not just a day off from work set aside to honor Dr. King, but a national day of volunteer service. In Virginia, service projects and special events are planned in virtually every part of the state and include efforts concerning education, the environment, children's issues, mentoring, financial advice and more.

New Report Shows Student Service on the Rise
The Corporation for National and Community Service (CNCS) has released a report showing that community service in America's schools has reached a new peak, with 68 percent of all K-12 schools offering or recognizing service opportunities for their students. "Community Service and Service-Learning in America's Schools 2008" found that while school-based community-service has remained robust, the percentage of schools with service-learning declined from 32 percent in 1999 to 24 percent in 2008.
The report provides an in-depth look at the prevalence of community service and service-learning in public schools and provides insight into recent trends. It is the result of a survey of a national sample of more than 2,000 K-12 public school principals across America conducted by CNCS in partnership with the independent research firm Westat. Volunteers Needed for AARP’s Operation Energy Save
Virginia AARP is launching a new volunteer program this fall to help those in need. With energy costs rising this winter, many older Virginians and those on fixed incomes will be at risk. One way to help is to provide assistance in reducing the amount of energy that is consumed. AARP is working to mobilize an army of volunteers to communicate to their friends and neighbors about the many low or no cost modifications they can make to their homes that can result in significant savings during the heating season. Every dollar saved can make the difference between buying food and medicine or staying warm.
The Plan:
- Virginia organizations are invited to take part in this effort -- nonprofits, government agencies, faith-based organizations, service clubs, and volunteer networks -- using their resources to jump into action.
- AARP will provide simple tools that volunteers can use to do a home assessment and make these tools easily accessible online so that organizations and volunteers have everything they need to get the job done.
- Volunteers can be engaged either as individuals who are self-directed or through their associations that have strong roots in local communities.
- Feedback mechanisms will be in place to capture data to measure impact, record stories of how volunteer engagement made a real difference to real people, and provide a means to recognize the thousands of people who volunteered their time.
Visit the AARP Virginia Web site for complete details on how individuals and organizations can help. Checklists, tip sheets, and other information to spread the word is available.
