Yes, Virginia, There is a Plan!
The statewide council working on the Virginia Unified State Plan (USP) for Service and Volunteerism met for the first time on May 3 in Richmond. Agreeing that the state plan should be exactly that--a statewide plan to strengthen all types of service and volunteering in Virginia--the group pledged to continue toward building a mechanism for stakeholders to contribute to the plan, identify needs and assets they bring to the plan, and to participate in implementing and renewing the plan. The Virginia Commission, State Office of the Corporation for National & Community Service, and the Department of Education (DOE) are required to participate in the plan as it relates to national service. One Million 501(c)(3)s in the U.S.
In its April 1 edition, the NonProfit Times reported that some time during summer 2004 the number of 501(c)(3) organizations grew to 1 million. While there has been enormous growth in the number of new c3s--about 40,000 a year according to the IRS Master File--no one knows how many of the million may no longer be operating but not yet dissolved. Those critical of this level of growth point to increased competition for charitable donations, increased duplication of effort, and the like. Proponents stress that the plurality of our system provides the climate in which people see a problem and organize to solve it and that this should be encouraged. For more views on this trend, read the NPT article. If you have an opinion, pro or con, about the issue, please express it in an email to by the end of May.- Published on Monday, May 16, 2005
