May is Mental Health Month

National Mental Health Month is designed to encourage the community to come together to support individuals with mental illness, to reduce stigmas associated with mental illness, and to create awareness for issues related to mental health services. Mental illnesses -- such as depression, anxiety, and bipolar disorder -- are widespread and often misunderstood. It is important for the public to understand that individuals with mental illness can recover and be active participants in the community.

The Community Mental Health Partners has announced several community events to promote mental wellness:

  • Fourth Annual Candlelight Vigil of Hope, Fredericksburg (May 2) - Speakers will share their personal stories of recovery. Musical entertainment will be provided by Tom Beauleau and Brett Milstead. The vigil is organized by the local Recovery in Motion peer support group. For more information contact Velma Walker, (540) 373-3433, or Mental Health America of Fredericksburg, (540) 371-2704.
  • Fourth Annual "Art of Recovery" Art Show, Fredericksburg (May 21-June 4) - This show will be held at the University of Mary Washington's DuPont Gallery and features original artwork by adults with mental illness. To learn more, visit www.racsb.state.va.us or call (540) 899-4673.
