      <content:encoded><![CDATA[<p>On September 11, AmeriCorps programs are joining with AARP Virginia and Ruritan to insure a safe and healthy supply of food in food banks in your own community.&nbsp; As more families struggle to make ends meet, Virginia's food banks need help in feeding hungry people.&nbsp;&nbsp; Organizations are encouraged to join the effort on September 11 by filling a bag with non-perishable food that your local food bank needs most.&nbsp; Those items include peanut butter, chunky soups, canned meats, canned tuna, canned vegetables, crackers, hot and cold cereal, pasta, rice and canned fruit.&nbsp; No glass containers, please.&nbsp; Focus on foods that are part of a healthy diet including those that are low in fat, sugar and salt and are made with whole grains.&nbsp; The list of drop-off sites for the food drive is available by zip code at <a href="http://www.CreateTheGood.org">www.CreateTheGood.org</a> and will be updated regularly.&nbsp; If there is no food drop site near you, please take the food to a local food pantry or community food bank.</p>]]></content:encoded>

	The Office on Volunteerism and Community Services (OVCS) is partnering with <a href="http://www.vacommunitycapital.org">Virginia Community Capital</a> (VCC) in the VCC Learning Initiative focused on Emerging Leaders. This initiative supports our mission of increasing the capacity of faith-based and community organizations who want to:</p>
<ul>
	<li>
		Operate at a high level of effectiveness</li>
	<li>
		Build strong relationships to achieve greater results, and</li>
	<li>
		Increase resource access and use.</li>
</ul>
<p>
	The focus of this workshop will be <em>Working in Teams and Collaborations &ndash; Partnering for Success</em>. We invite you to register for this jointly-sponsored workshop in Radford on September 16 from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. The workshop will be held at the New River Valley Competitiveness Center, 6580 Valley Center Drive, Suite 302.</p>

Created to spotlight the best in youth leadership, the program identifies teens whose efforts are making a profound impact in lives other than their own. The program honors young people ages 13 to 18 who have excelled in school and who are making their community and the world a better place. The maximum recipient award is $1,000. Youth ages 13 and 18 years of age who demonstrate good citizenship, a strong academic record, and can show how they have made a special contribution to their school, church, or the community are eligible.
