Mentoring Youth Effectively

Posted by Kimberly Brown,

It is very important for mentors to provide mentees with effective practices. The Mentor Consulting Group, an online website for mentoring consulting services listed sixteen steps to effective youth mentoring. Listed here are eight of the sixteen steps:

  1. Establishing a mentoring program? Be sure that everyone in the community involved with youth is part of the planning. (i.e., members of the school board, superintendent, school staff, parents, etc.)
  2. youthmentoring
  3. If the mentoring site is a school, selecting the first school to begin the program is critical.
  4. Gather demographic and dropout statistics.
  5. While recruiting mentors, include the volunteers from businesses who are already involved with active partnership programs in their community.
  6. Recruit only mentors who are caring, committed, and patient.
  7. Conduct a thorough screening on all prospective mentors.
  8. All mentors must be trained before beginning in the program.
  9. Parental permission must be obtained for all minor children who enter the program. Additional information on these mentoring steps is located at Dr. Mentor online.
