A program of Citizen Corps which educates people about disaster preparedness and trains them in basic disaster response skills, such as fire safety, light search and rescue, and disaster medical operations. CERT members are responsible for preparing neighborhoods or workplaces for disasters and assisting others when an event occurs. The program also encompasses TEEN CERT and Campus CERT, which focus on engaging young people in emergency response.

The “Small Business Disaster Response and Loan Improvements Act of 2008” (signed June 18, 2008), authorizes private nonprofit (PNP) organizations, regardless of size, eligibility for economic injury disaster loans (EIDL). An EIDL can help your organization meet necessary financial obligations that your nonprofit could have met had the disaster not occurred. It provides relief from economic injury caused directly by the disaster and permits your organization to maintain a reasonable working capital position during the period affected by the disaster.
