AmeriCorps
The purpose of AmeriCorps*State is to engage AmeriCorps members in direct service and capacity-building to address unmet community needs. Participants are called members and may receive an education award and other benefits. The program encompasses AmeriCorps State and National, AmeriCorps National Civilian Community Corps (NCCC), and AmeriCorps VISTA.

Citizen Corps
Local Citizen Corps Councils were created following the tragic events of September 11, 2001, in order to foster collaboration among Federal and local government and civic leaders involved in emergency management and homeland security. Citizen Corps oversees five national programs, which are supported by FEMA: Community Emergency Response Teams (CERT), Fire Corps, Medical Reserve Corps, USAonWatch/Neighborhood Watch, and Volunteers in Police Service.

Community Emergency Response Teams (CERT)
A program of Citizen Corps which educates people about disaster preparedness and trains them in basic disaster response skills, such as fire safety, light search and rescue, and disaster medical operations. CERT members are responsible for preparing neighborhoods or workplaces for disasters and assisting others when an event occurs. The program also encompasses TEEN CERT and Campus CERT, which focus on engaging young people in emergency response.
